I Caved (And I'd Do It Again): What Happened When My Workout Plan Went Out the Window

Show notes from the creator
Sometimes the best thing you can do for your fitness plan is ignore it. When the weather tanked Ashley's Thursday hike, she did what any reasonable person would do: she caved and headed straight to the gym instead. In this episode, Ashley breaks down what happens when your new workout schedule collides with real life, and why "caving" might actually be the smartest move you can make. She shares what it was like to stack a Pilates class and a Tabata session back to back, why she only struggled with one exercise (and why that felt like a win), and what it meant to lift her 20-pound dumbbells and feel strong doing it. She also gets into her love for morning stretching, why bedtime stretches might be next on her list, and what it really means to stay committed to movement even when the plan changes. If you've ever felt guilty for adjusting your routine, this one's for you. Do you want a Facebook Group for accountability? This will surprise exactly no one. I caved. What's
00:08
up, you guys? Famous Ashley Grant here. Welcome
00:10
to More Movement, Please, the podcast where I
00:12
hope to inspire you to move your body more. Today,
00:14
I want to talk about caving because that's exactly
00:17
what I did. I caved. Oh, if you've been listening
00:21
to this podcast for a while, you know I've been
00:22
trying to be as transparent as possible on my
00:24
journey. And one of the things I said recently
00:27
was that I was going to cut back from five days
00:30
a week to three days a week at the gym. But it
00:32
didn't mean I was going to stop moving my body.
00:34
I was going to move my body every day. And the
00:36
plan was that on Thursdays I was going to be
00:38
hiking. Well, today it is really gross out. And
00:42
yeah, so I'm caving. I'm going to the gym. I'm
00:46
headed there right now. On the one hand, it feels
00:49
like I'm caving in the sense that I was trying
00:51
to commit to a full month of switching to this
00:53
new schedule. But on the other hand, it's like,
00:56
well, if the weather is not so great and I can't
01:00
do the outdoor activity I had planned, well,
01:03
shouldn't I still do something? And I kind of
01:05
feel like, yes. So that's what I'm doing. I'm
01:07
heading to the gym and it just so happens that
01:09
my. instructor is subbing for another teacher.
01:12
So she will be teaching an additional class.
01:15
So I will be doing two and a half hours worth
01:17
of workouts instead of just one and a half, which
01:19
is what usually happens on Thursday. But I'm
01:21
excited about it. I'm excited to see if I can
01:24
still handle all that she's about to throw at
01:26
me. And I will report back as soon as I'm done
01:29
with the brutal torture that is about to be thrust
01:32
upon me that I signed up for. Okay, I am back
01:38
from my Pilates and Tabata classes that I took
01:41
today. I normally would stay for stretch, but
01:43
I simply do not have time. I have to get back
01:46
home because I have to take care of some work.
01:49
But I am glad I was able to take these classes
01:51
today. Like I said, I normally hike on Thursdays
01:54
now, and that was the plan. But since the weather's
01:56
yucky and the grounds are gross, I was like,
01:59
all right, I'm going to take the Pilates class
02:01
that's being subbed and then do Tabata. And it
02:04
felt good. I did struggle with one exercise,
02:07
and I'm glad it was only one exercise. But other
02:10
than that, I got through it just fine, and I'm
02:13
very happy that I was able to do it. So that's
02:16
why it's so important to me that I continue moving
02:18
every single day, even though I'm not going to
02:20
the gym as much as I was. I mean, the whole point
02:23
of not going to the gym as often was simply to
02:27
try to have a little bit more balance. Try to
02:30
do additional activities outside of the gym.
02:32
Part of the reason that I did this is because
02:34
I wanted to start working out with my husband
02:36
more. We wanted to go on some hikes. We enjoyed
02:39
our road trip so much that I wanted to start
02:41
doing some hikes. And we have a lot of amazing
02:43
trails right around the area that I live in.
02:45
And so that was the plan. But I think that any
02:50
time that the weather's yucky or I can't. go
02:53
hiking for any reason, I think I'll try to make
02:56
a point to at least still do something a little
02:58
bit more active than just walking, stretching,
03:00
yoga, Pilates, etc. There is something truly
03:04
special about Tabata. I absolutely love that
03:07
class. It's kind of become my second favorite.
03:11
My favorite still remains Zumba. I think I will
03:14
forever be a Zumba girly, but in terms of the
03:18
full body workout plus weightlifting, Tabata
03:22
is definitely my second favorite. I truly, truly
03:25
enjoy it. In terms of mobility, I mean, I've
03:29
told you guys before, I absolutely love the stretch
03:31
classes that I've been doing. Those have become
03:33
like my necessary thing that I do. And I do them
03:39
pretty much every morning. Anytime I don't do
03:41
it, it's either that I woke up late or something
03:44
has happened and I couldn't do it first thing
03:47
in the morning because that is my favorite time
03:49
to stretch is first thing in the morning. I think
03:51
there's something important about doing it first
03:54
thing in the morning because it wakes up the
03:56
rest of your muscles. It tells your body it's
03:58
time to go. And it also helps you to just move
04:01
throughout the day. And some people have actually
04:03
been recommending to me lately that I start doing
04:05
bedtime stretches that apparently there are certain
04:08
stretches you can do that will help you sleep
04:10
better. So I think I'm actually going to start
04:12
implementing that as well. If you guys have heard
04:16
of any really good bedtime stretches, I'd love
04:19
to hear from you. Hit me up at famousashtagrant
04:21
.com backslash fitness. I love hearing from you
04:23
guys. I'm about to do another round of reaching
04:26
out to fitness experts to get their opinions
04:29
on things and find out all the things, learn
04:31
more, because that's what this whole thing is
04:34
for me is it's a learning journey. And as much
04:37
as it is a fitness journey, it's a learning journey.
04:40
And I know I've got a lot to learn. I know I've
04:42
still got... so much work to do in terms of getting
04:45
to my weight loss goals and my fitness goals.
04:47
But I'm still loving what I'm doing. And I'm
04:51
really grateful that I have the ability to kind
04:54
of change my schedule whenever I need to. And
04:57
yeah, so. So, yeah, if in the event that I can't
05:01
for some reason do a hike, I will be going to
05:05
the gym, most like I'm not I'm not sure how often
05:08
this will be. I fully intend to try to commit
05:11
to my plan of. only doing the gym three days
05:14
a week, but we'll see how it goes. I'm really
05:16
not sure what the future holds, honestly, but
05:19
I'm excited and I'm grateful that I was only
05:22
struggling, like I said, with one exercise today.
05:25
And other than that, I was able to get through
05:27
it and I still used my 20 pound weights and I'm
05:30
happy actually, because, you know, using those
05:32
20 pound dumbbells shows me that I'm, I'm finally
05:35
getting stronger and finally able to handle more
05:37
than I was able to handle before. So, um, we're
05:40
done upwards, my friends. Have you worked out
05:42
today? Thank you.
