Why Strength Training Now Could Save You From a Broken Hip Later

Show notes from the creator
What if the exercises you skip today are the reason you can't get off the floor at 70? Chiropractor and strength specialist Dr. Matt Tanneberg breaks down exactly why muscle strength and balance training aren't optional as we age, they're what keeps you upright, steady, and able to catch yourself before a fall turns into a fracture. In this episode, Dr. Tanneberg explains how single leg exercises, yoga, tai chi, and qigong build the coordination and stability that protect your joints and bones for the long haul. He also breaks down what's actually happening inside your body when you strengthen your tendons and ligaments, and why that "clicking" or achy joint feeling often traces back to weak connective tissue you can train. This one will change how you think about every workout you do from here on out. This podcast is for entertainment purposes only and is not medical advice. I'll be back really soon, but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy this mini podcast takeover. Let's get into today's episode. My name is Dr. Matt Tannenberg. I'm a chiropractor and strength and conditioning specialist. My business is called Body Check Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation in Scottsdale, Arizona.

And today we're talking about... how we can use exercise as a means to prevent injury as we age and there's a lot of different benefits to exercise as you probably imagine i mean in terms of building muscular strength improving balance and coordination keeping your joints mobile there's lots of benefit that directly comes out of exercise itself but specifically for aging we need that muscle strength and stability to be able to hold our body upright.
01:00
We need that muscle strength and stability to be able to help us if we fall to get up off the ground. So it goes a lot deeper than simply just contracting, shortening, lengthening, and elongating the muscle. It comes to functionality. It comes to be able to help ourselves when you're in a uncomfortable situation or a situation where you gotta get up, use your muscles, and engage them quickly if there's some kind of harm or danger around you. In terms of balance and coordination, having that same muscle strength and stability is going to help your coordination, your balance, and not let you get to those vulnerable positions where you might fall, you might fracture a hip or something like that. So things like strength training on one leg at a time, doing single leg exercises, different movements like yoga, qigong, tai chi, these things where you're going to get some fluidity of the movement and have a lot
01:52
of coordination and balance training will go a long ways as we age. In terms of the deeper structures of our spine and our joints, exercise, especially weight -bearing exercise, is going to help with our bone density. So you lose some of that fragility as we age, and you can sustain a lot of that strength in the bone itself. Other structures that are going to help get strengthened as well in your exercise are your tendons and ligaments. these hold the bones and joints together the tendons are going to connect the muscle to bone the ligaments are going to connect bone to bone so as we strengthen our muscle we're also going to strengthen and tighten up those tissues as well as soon as you get laxity in the tendons or ligaments you start having joints that click and pop they can become painful over time or kind of get randomly inflamed from too much movement in the joint or movement that's not normal to that joint whatever we're talking
02:41
about it's like a knee for example if you have some laxity in the ligaments you might have more lateral movement left and right movement of that knee than you really should or want to so exercise is going to give you a lot of short -term benefit It's going to help us long term as we age to be able to keep us away from the fragility of just being vulnerable to a fall itself. And even those sticky situations, those dangerous situations, exercise is going to help us get out of that quickly and effectively. Thanks for tuning in to the More Movement, Please podcast.
