Ashley introduces the episode's topic — how important music is to her personally — and reflects on realizing its significance only after doing workouts without it during recent travels.
I don't know about you guys, but for me, music
is life. What's up, my movers and shakers? Famous
Ashton Grant here. Welcome to More Movement,
Please, the podcast where I hope to inspire you
to move your body more. Today, I want to talk
about how important to me music is. Because y
'all, it is a playlist that can drag me through
no matter what. It's one of those things that...
I didn't really realize just how important it
was until I had to do a couple workouts where
there was no music. And music moves me, y 'all.
Like, it's just one of those things that when
I hear music, especially good music, I'm able
to get through workouts so much easier than I
am when there's not music playing. And I got
a really good example, a really good taste of
this during my recent travels. There have been
a few times where I've been traveling lately.
And I was trying to do exercises in the hotel
room or I was doing exercises, you know, to and
from the locations like destinations and things
like that. We would stop to do, we'd stop to
let the dogs out or we'd stop to, you know, get
a snack or get gas or whatever. And during those
times, I was trying to add in movement. So I
would, you know, do squats or jumping jacks or
something, whatever it was. It was interesting
to me how much harder everything felt because
there wasn't music playing. And it's nuts to
say that because it seems like, well, it's the
Ashley describes how music transports her mentally during workouts, helping her forget pain and push through reps, and praises her YMCA instructor Rhonda's eclectic playlist as a prime example.
same movement. No, it's really not. And here's
why. When I am listening to music while I am
doing my workouts, it's like I'm transported
somewhere else. I'm able to focus so much more
on the music that. I'm able to kind of forget
about the pain for a minute, especially when
it's a song I like. And I think that's one of
the reasons that I've been saying that I love
the classes that my instructor at the YMCA has
so much. This girl, Rhonda Good. My God, your
playlist is one of the best playlists I've ever
heard in my whole life. It's very eclectic. She
has, you know, she's got rock. She's got rap.
She's got hip hop. She's got, you know, Latin.
She's got all kinds of music in her playlist.
And it's so good. And the reason I love it so
much is because like, especially when it's a
song I know, I especially in those moments that
I'm getting hurt or or I'm in pain, I'll just
start like listening to the lyrics that much
more. And whenever I do, I forget about just
how much it hurts. I don't know if you guys have
ever experienced this, but it's just one of those
things that like if I'm hearing really good music,
I feel like I can pump harder. I can I can do
the reps more intentionally or I can. get through
that moment where I'm just like, yeah, I got
this. And I've noticed that it happens around
me too. Like there was a girl that I saw recently.
I won't name names, I promise. So this is not
a shame thing. I swear it. It is more impression,
impressiveness. Like I was impressed by this
girl. She was struggling with a move and then
a really good song came on. And whenever it came
on, I noticed her tone changed completely. Like
her whole body just like. shifted and she was
working out harder than I had seen before and
it was like she got excited and it lit her up
and she was able to do the moves so well and
I'm sure it still hurt like hell but you know
what when you have a good piece of music on it
is just amazing how you get so much better of
a workout and so if you are not working out with
Ashley shares an observation of a woman at her class who was struggling with a move until a good song came on and visibly shifted her whole energy and performance.
music I want you to start find yourself a really
good playlist that just rocks your world And
I think you'll find that you're going to enjoy
your workout so much better. It will just feel
better. There's just something so magical about
it. I think that's part of the reason I love
Zumba so much is because most of the songs there,
they like inspire you to move. And there are
some songs that I'll hear and I'm just like,
yeah, I'm like ready to go. Let's pump me up.
Let's go. And it's just it's one of those things
where if I had the choice between music or not
music while working out, I will choose music
all day, every day and twice on Sunday. Because
it's that important. Like hearing really good
music, it's like it changes something in your
brainwaves and you're in, you just, like I said,
it transports me to another place. So I want
you to start looking for music that you like,
something that just gets you jazzed and gets
you in the mood to move. Because I think you'll
find that if you do that, you're going to move
more. And that's what the whole name of the game
is, right? Move your body more. Onwards and upwards,
my friends. Have you worked out today?
