How I'm Prepping My Body (and My Bag) for Four Days of Walking at Gen Con
▸ Show notes from the creator
Someone told Ashley she'd walk eleven thousand steps in a single day at Gen Con, and that one comment lit a fire under her prep plan. In this episode of More Movement Please, she walks you through exactly how she's getting her body ready for four straight days on the convention floor and what's going into her bag to stay fueled the whole time. She talks through her beloved Asics Nova Blast 5s, the resistance band and bodyweight workouts she's packing, why she's swapping sodas for fruit juice, and her hunt for an electrolyte packet that won't wreck her budget. She also covers the snack strategy for when hanger hits, the chapstick and lotion she refuses to travel without, and the smart tip about labeling her board games. If you've ever wondered how to stay active and fed at a big event, this one's for you. Have you worked out today?

Less than two months to Gen Con and all is well.
00:07
What's up you guys? Famous Ashley Gantt here.
00:09
Welcome to More Movement Please, the podcast
00:10
where I hope to inspire you to move your body
00:12
more. So I am less than two months from Gen Con
00:16
and I know just how much I'll be walking while
00:19
I'm there. Someone said something insane about
00:22
like walking 11 ,000 steps just in one day, trying
00:25
to walk around to all the places inside of the...
00:28
inside of the convention center. And so all I
00:30
can think about is, man, I really need to get
00:33
my butt in gear and be prepared for all that
00:36
cardio and all that walking. It's not that I'm
00:38
afraid that I won't be able to handle it. It's
00:40
just that I want to be able to handle it really
00:43
well. Because, yeah, I can finally lift weights
00:47
pretty well and I can get through cardio classes
00:50
and whatever. But it's like a whole new ballgame
00:52
whenever you're talking about four straight days
00:54
of constant walking. And so. That's one thing
00:57
that I am really thinking about a lot right now.
00:59
That's why I'm recording this on a walk is because
01:01
I'm like, damn, it's getting closer and I need
01:04
to make sure that I am prepared to do all that
01:07
walking. So I kind of wanted to talk about how
01:09
I'm preparing for this four day event and the
01:13
things that I'll be bringing with me to make
01:15
sure that I'm basically fueled and ready while
01:18
I'm while I'm at it. So I definitely will be
01:22
bringing the ASIC shoes that I purchased for.
01:26
the gym. I have been loving them. They're the
01:28
Nova Blast 5s and I've absolutely been loving
01:31
them. They've been really great shoes so far
01:33
and I can definitely notice a difference in terms
01:35
of how I stand, how I walk, and all that good
01:37
stuff. So those are definitely going with me
01:40
in my bag. I'm also bringing my resistance band.
01:44
I'm bringing that with me because I do fully
01:46
intend on doing some exercises outside of the
01:49
lots and lots of walking that I already know
01:52
I'll be doing. I have the exercises from my road
01:55
trip that I took to Florida still written down.
01:59
And I will be using my body weight for much of
02:03
the like weight exercises. I'll be using my body
02:07
weight for those. And I definitely need the resistance
02:09
bands for some of the exercises that are on my
02:11
list. So I'm bringing that definitely bringing
02:13
a bunch of water. I mean, whenever we went to
02:16
Florida. We went through so much water on our
02:19
trip. And so I definitely see that in my future.
02:22
Lots and lots of water. And I'm also going to
02:25
be bringing some fruit juices because we're trying
02:28
to stop reaching for sodas so much. But that's
02:31
one of the things on my list. And we're considering
02:33
those electrolyte packets because some people
02:36
have been telling me that that would help me
02:37
in terms of performance. And so I'm looking into
02:39
different ones that are... are considered really
02:42
good for performance. But the problem that I
02:44
have found with so many of them is how expensive
02:46
they are. Is that just me? Like, am I crazy?
02:49
Like, are you guys seeing the same things? I
02:51
really want to know. Like, let me know if there's
02:54
a really good and inexpensive electrolyte packet
02:56
that I should consider for my water. And so that's
03:00
definitely something that I'm going to be bringing.
03:02
Also, we'll be bringing granola bars because
03:04
like I've told y 'all in the past, when I get
03:07
hangry, it's not pretty and it's not good for
03:08
anybody. So I'm going to make sure that I have
03:12
grill bars with me so that while we're walking
03:14
around the convention floor, if I get hangry,
03:17
I've got something that can help me quickly.
03:19
That's a plan. I will also be bringing chapstick
03:22
with me because I don't know about y 'all, but
03:24
whenever I'm walking like convention centers,
03:26
I always seem to get really dry lips. I don't
03:29
know if it's because I walk so much that I'm
03:30
not getting enough hydration, but y 'all, it's
03:33
like I really need the chapstick. My personal
03:38
favorite is Burt's Bees, so I will be bringing
03:39
lots and lots of that. My second favorite is
03:42
Blistex, and I'll probably be bringing that too,
03:45
because your girl always gets chapped lips. Also,
03:47
we'll be bringing lots and lots of hand lotion.
03:50
I really like the various ones from Bath & Body
03:55
Works, but I've been getting turned on to goat's
03:57
milk lotion lately. I don't know why, but it
04:00
seems like it's like... This might sound weird,
04:04
but... Seems creamier. So I'll definitely be
04:07
bringing hand lotion. I doubt I'll be bringing
04:09
notebooks this time. I normally only do that
04:11
for conferences where I'm actually going to be
04:12
taking classes and things like that. So I doubt
04:15
I'll be bringing notebooks, but I definitely
04:17
will be bringing games. And I got a really great
04:20
tip from someone that I should put my address
04:22
and phone number into the lid of every single
04:24
game that I'm bringing. That way, you know, it's...
04:28
someone knows it's mine and they can, like if
04:30
I forget it or whatever, I can just keep track
04:33
of the fact that it's mine. And someone else
04:35
said that I should put an air tag in all of them.
04:36
I don't know if I'll go that far, but I definitely
04:38
will be putting my address into the box so that
04:42
everybody knows it's mine. We're also going to
04:44
be bringing refillable water bottles because
04:46
I don't really want to just buy a bunch of plastic
04:49
and have a bunch of plastic. I'd rather, you
04:51
know, I guess be environmentally friendly. And
04:55
they hold more. Like my water bottles hold about
04:57
32 ounces and that's better than a 16 ounce bottle
05:01
and I'd have to carry less. So I'll probably
05:03
be doing that. I know there's a lot of water
05:05
fountains around the convention center so I could
05:07
easily refill. But yeah, so that's the main things
05:11
that I'm going to be bringing with me. In terms
05:13
of food while we're there, I know we're definitely
05:15
going to be doing the tuna and crackers again
05:17
for lunches. And we're looking into, you know,
05:21
other quick heat meat kind of meals. that we
05:24
can have for both lunches and dinners because
05:27
it's no secret that it's kind of expensive to
05:29
travel and so since we're already spending money
05:32
on the hotel and the tickets and the gas because
05:35
lord have mercy gas has gotten ridiculous um
05:37
we're trying to be mindful of where else we're
05:40
spending our money we did go out to eat far too
05:42
many times while we were on our florida road
05:44
trip and we're trying to avoid that for this
05:46
trip so and now we're even talking about adding
05:49
an additional stop on the way home to go to chicago
05:53
for a couple of things. And so if we do that,
05:56
then I know we're going to be going out to eat
05:57
there because my husband wants a Chicago dog
06:00
and I kind of want to give Chicago deep dish
06:03
pizza another try. So we're probably going to
06:05
be going out to eat there. But other than that,
06:07
the goal is to try to bring food with us so that
06:10
we can be a little more economical on this trip
06:14
than we were on our Florida trip. So yeah, that's
06:16
the Reader's Digest version of the main things
06:19
that we're bringing on our trip to Gen Con. Am
06:22
I forgetting anything? I'd love to hear from
06:23
y 'all. Hit me up at famous -sugar .com backslash
