01:23
What's up, my bloggy friends? Famous Ashley Grant
01:25
here, and today I want to talk about how to write
01:27
a blog post properly using AI. And I know everybody's
01:31
talking about it. Everybody's been talking about
01:33
Claude and ChatGPT and WriterZen and all the
01:36
things. And before you come at me, I should state
01:39
that I'm a writer. I make a living from creating
01:41
content every week. I'm not team AI, but I'm
01:44
not exactly team no AI either. And hopefully
01:47
by the end of this episode, you'll understand
01:50
why I'm talking about blogging with AI at all.
01:53
Because the truth is, it's here to stay. Yes,
01:56
there's a lot of lawsuits that are going on right
01:57
now, but I definitely believe that we're going
01:59
to keep seeing some form of LLMs continue being
02:04
in the space. So we might as well learn how to
02:06
lean into it and use it to help make our writing
02:08
jobs easier so that we can make more content
02:11
and do the things that we need to do with our
02:13
websites. And for those of you who've been living
02:16
under a rock, what exactly is AI? What is AI
02:19
writing software? TechTarget refers to AI or
02:22
artificial intelligence as the simulation of
02:25
human intelligence processes by machines, especially
02:28
computer systems. By extension, AI writing software
02:32
is supposed to simulate content that's been written
02:34
by human writers. And with the use of algorithms,
02:37
suggestions, and a lot of complicated computerized
02:39
ones and zeros, AI writing software should theoretically
02:43
be able to take a prompt that a user gives it
02:45
and deliver text content back to the user. The
02:51
reason it's causing such a stir, though, in the
02:53
writing world is because it can generate large
02:56
bits of text. I mean, I'm talking full -on books
02:58
in mere seconds. And what's taking content writers
03:03
hours to complete can be created in seconds without
03:06
breaking a sweat. Of course, that's not to say
03:09
that what's generated is accurate, and it's also
03:12
not even necessarily great content. However,
03:15
as I've been playing with different writing tools
03:17
at this point, I have to admit, it is certainly
03:20
impressive that different software can spit out
03:23
pretty decent content depending on which one
03:26
you're using and the prompts you're giving it.
03:28
So if we're being honest, what can AI accomplish?
03:31
I think that what AI can accomplish depends largely
03:34
on your goals. The different functions that I've
03:36
seen it being used for include but aren't limited
03:39
to writing your first draft, writing your intros,
03:41
writing your conclusions, generating a list of
03:44
blog topics. creating different heading and title
03:46
options for your blog post, summarizing your
03:49
points of an article or a blog, generating product
03:52
descriptions for e -commerce stores, writing
03:55
entire blog posts, articles, essays, poems, even
03:58
songs. So it can also be used for like writing
04:02
ad copy, brainstorming ideas, answering questions,
04:05
but keep in mind that the answers you get may
04:07
not be factual. And it can even break down complicated
04:10
ideas into easier to digest ones. For example,
04:13
if you're taking large bits of text that you
04:16
don't quite understand you could put them into
04:18
something like quad and it'll spit back out an
04:21
easier to understand version of that thing for
04:23
you so you could you know put a essay that has
04:26
been written by a college graduate into it and
04:30
say break this down in a way a five -year -old
04:32
could understand and it actually does it but
04:35
this isn't just for the writing portion of blogging.
04:38
I've seen it used for so many different use cases,
04:41
but for the purposes of this episode, we're going
04:43
to mainly focus on AI in writing because, after
04:47
all, this is a blogging podcast. So let's talk
04:49
about the ethical considerations of writing blog
04:52
posts with AI. They're talking about carbon emissions
04:56
generated because of the computing power that
05:00
AI tech is causing. So some people are nervous
05:03
about how many computers are being used to generate
05:06
these LLMs and make them work. And the other
05:09
thing that people are concerned with in terms
05:11
of ethical considerations is what a lot of people
05:14
refer to as AI plagiarism. And I spoke with SEO
05:18
and copywriting expert Ryan Brock. We had him
05:20
on the show recently, and I will definitely leave
05:22
that that episode in the show notes. When I spoke
05:25
to him, he was basically talking about. You know,
05:28
whether we like it or not, ChatGPT, all these
05:30
other writing programs, they're just plagiarism,
05:33
period, at least in his opinion. And a lot of
05:36
other people share this opinion with him because
05:38
basically the way that these programs have been
05:41
built is they scrape the Internet and then they
05:44
repackage it into a slightly different structure
05:46
and it gives it back to you. So no matter how
05:48
you look at it, he says, it's plagiarism and
05:51
it's not cool. And he went on to say that by
05:54
scraping other people's content. You're not providing
05:56
any new value to anyone. And that's not how you
06:00
build trust factor if you're trying to establish
06:02
yourself as a thought leader. And it's one of
06:04
the big reasons that right now, one of the big
06:05
things we're seeing that's actually getting populated
06:07
on Google is real use cases, real experts that
06:12
are talking about things they have done that
06:14
are working in their industries. So, you know,
06:17
where you used to be able to get all these listicles
06:18
about 10 ways to make a guy want you or 10 ways
06:22
to make a cake or. Take a cake mix and make cookies
06:26
like all these different things. All these listicles
06:28
are now being replaced by people that are experts
06:31
in their field talking about what they're doing
06:34
in those fields. And those are the things that
06:36
are starting to ring faster and more, especially
06:39
after Google's useful content update. They are
06:42
not diminishing AI and they're certainly not.
06:45
I wouldn't say they're there. penalizing people
06:49
that are using AI. They did definitely walk back
06:52
on that saying, you know, they will not penalize
06:54
websites. However, they will give the websites
06:57
that are giving more content, better content,
07:00
useful content, higher rankings. So it'll be
07:04
interesting to see what happens in 2024 and beyond
07:06
with all of this content that has definitely
07:08
been AI written. And people can tell, let's be
07:11
honest, people can tell that it's happening.
07:13
And it has similar sentence structure. It has
07:16
similar sentences even. Sometimes it'll have
07:19
certain words. Like I was just reading an article
07:21
on Medium Today that certain words make it obvious
07:25
that your text is written by AI. This article
07:28
was written by, I'm going to totally butcher
07:30
this guy's name. It's James Presbytero Jr., I
07:32
believe. I'll leave a link to that in the show
07:34
notes as well. Basically, the seven things that
07:40
he says. Make it obvious you are using AI or
07:44
words like transformative or foster tapestry,
07:48
a tapestry of this is about all about. Think
07:52
of X as and the example he gives is think of
07:54
influential blogs and forums as your digital
07:57
mentors. So it's it's all these words and phrases
08:01
that we're starting to see over and over again.
08:03
Like one of the things that I'm seeing that keeps
08:04
popping up is the word coincidentally or if a
08:08
sentence starts with the word by. Like by using
08:11
this program, you can, you know, have all your
08:14
dreams come true. Whenever you see a sentence
08:16
like that, it's a red flag to me that it's probably
08:18
been written by AI. And so I just think it's
08:22
interesting that the more we look at the different
08:24
articles that are being written, you can kind
08:26
of tell that they're AI written. And there's
08:30
even programs that will tell you if it has been
08:32
AI written that you can plug it into, like, you
08:34
know, your copy leaks or. There's all kinds of
08:37
different programs. I'll have to put them in
08:38
the show notes. But the big one I've been seeing
08:40
lately is copy leaks. And it's kind of fascinating
08:42
that even though we all know it's being used,
08:45
it's still being used. So back to how to use
08:48
it properly. So let's talk about SEO considerations
08:55
if you're using AI writing tools. If you're writing
08:59
blog content, can you make it rank in search
09:02
results at all? And based on all the research
09:05
I've done for this episode, yeah, you can, but
09:08
there's a major caveat. You have to add a lot
09:10
more to the post that's being generated with
09:12
AI before you can ever hope to rank with it.
09:14
In other words, if you just copy and paste the
09:17
content that's generated from your favorite AI
09:19
writing solution into WordPress or whatever CMS
09:22
you're using, no, you probably won't rank well
09:24
for it. But if you take that piece, that base
09:28
piece, and you improve upon it, make it much
09:30
better, yes, you can rank with it. And here are
09:33
the steps you need to take an AI -generated article
09:36
and get it to rank, if that's your goal. First
09:38
thing you'll do is you'll research the keywords,
09:40
whether you're using SEMrush or WritersIn or
09:42
Ahrefs or whatever it is. Start researching all
09:46
of the keywords that you want to use. You shouldn't
09:48
generate a single bit of text until you have
09:51
done a thorough keyword research session. While
09:54
you're researching these keywords, consider your
09:56
ideal customer or your ideal reader and what
09:58
they're actually going to be looking for that
10:00
will ultimately lead them to your page. Consider
10:02
the questions that they are asking and the pain
10:04
points that they are looking to solve and how
10:06
your product or service can solve them. Next,
10:09
I want you to come up with your article ideas.
10:11
Go to your favorite AI writing solution, whatever
10:13
it is, and add a simple prompt. For example,
10:16
let's say you are a personal trainer and you're
10:18
trying to get more clients in Scottsdale, Arizona.
10:21
So we're going to assume that you're trying to
10:23
rank for best personal trainer in Scottsdale.
10:27
In this case, your prompt could be something
10:28
as simple as give me 10 article ideas for the
10:31
best personal trainer in Scottsdale. From there,
10:34
I want you to generate an outline. Using one
10:36
of the prompts that whatever your program of
10:38
choice gives you, generate an outline for the
10:41
post. And in this case, we'll use something like
10:43
10 reasons to hire a personal trainer in Scottsdale,
10:45
benefits and results. And again, you can go to
10:48
any writing solution you like and prompt it to
10:51
create an outline for that specific topic. From
10:54
there, write the post. You could technically
10:57
keep reprompting into your writing software of
11:01
choice and address each of the points that were
11:03
given to you in your outline. And you could create
11:05
a pretty decent article that actually looks kind
11:08
of good. But the better option is to write the
11:12
post yourself and address each of these outline
11:14
ideas, adding in real examples and testimonials
11:17
from people that you've worked with that show
11:19
off your expertise and your authority on the
11:21
subjects. Because remember, Google is all about
11:23
eat right now. They want your expertise and your
11:25
authority and that you're a subject matter expert
11:28
on whatever it is you're talking about. Next,
11:31
you're going to go back and refine and optimize
11:33
your post. So you're going to edit it and make
11:35
it even better. Do things like add an FAQ section
11:37
to include more of the keywords that people are
11:39
looking for. However, don't keyword stuff the
11:42
post. However, don't keyword stuff the post.
11:50
However, don't keyword stuff the post. And then
11:54
you're going to include some images that are
11:56
optimized with proper alt tags and descriptions.
11:58
Don't forget to compress your images before you
12:00
load them into your post so you can increase
12:02
your, I'm sorry, so you can decrease your page
12:06
load time. Then I want you to break up larger
12:08
paragraphs into easier to read shorter paragraphs.
12:11
You have to think about adding subheads and making
12:14
it easier for a skimmer to read your article.
12:16
because you want to include stuff that someone
12:18
who's standing in a checkout at Walmart or Target
12:21
can just flip through on their phone and get
12:23
the gist of what it is you're trying to say.
12:25
Then you'll include things like links to authoritative
12:28
sites, links to your own blog posts that expand
12:30
on the ideas that were presented in the post,
12:32
and don't forget to create a solid meta description
12:35
that tells the search engines exactly what your
12:37
post is about. So that's kind of the Reader's
12:40
Digest version of how you're going to use AI
12:42
properly. Notice nowhere in there did I say you
12:45
actually should take it, write it, or ask your
12:49
software of choice to write it and then just
12:52
publish it. If you just do that, yeah, okay,
12:55
you're going to have content on your website
12:56
and you'll be able to constantly be able to update
12:58
your website. The problem is... you're not going
13:01
to have good content. It's going to be obvious.
13:03
Everybody's going to start seeing that we're
13:05
all using the same phrases. So instead, use actual
13:09
use cases, actual things that build up your expertise,
13:12
authoritativeness, and your trustworthiness.
13:15
And trust me, if you focus on what it is the
13:19
person who's ultimately going to read your article
13:21
wants to see, rather than just, oh, I need to
13:24
get content out this week, you're going to have
13:26
a much better chance of getting ranked on Google
13:28
or whatever search engine you like. than you
13:30
would with any other method. And Demand Jump,
13:34
Ryan Brock, who works for Demand Jump, he says
13:37
that he recommends writing around 16 posts that
13:39
are centered on that same subject so that you
13:41
can rank higher than your competitors. He refers
13:44
to this as a pillar -based marketing campaign,
13:46
and it's very similar to HubSpot's topic clusters
13:48
way of writing, and that involves writing long
13:50
-form content about several subtopics that are
13:53
all related to one central topic. In this case,
13:57
you could go back to step two of the how to use
14:01
AI and come up with more article ideas and maybe
14:04
write about all of them that are all related
14:06
to whatever topic it is that you're trying to
14:09
rank for. So I hope this was helpful. I know
14:12
it was a lot, but I hope that in using these
14:15
ideas, you can maybe make friends with the AI
14:18
overlords, but still. have original content.
14:21
Because yes, you can use AI to make it easier
14:24
on yourself to do things like brainstorming and
14:26
coming up with headers and meta descriptions
14:27
and content briefs and email subjects and all
14:29
the things. But don't just take whatever it is
14:33
that AI gives you and hit publish. Because...
14:37
We've all experimented with it, I'm sure. I mean,
14:39
I know that I've seen Neil Patel has done it.
14:41
The guy from Fat Stacks Blogs. Yeah, Niche Pursuits
14:44
has even done it. There's been so many different
14:47
creators that are trying to see how they can
14:49
use AI effectively. And I've been playing with
14:52
it, too, just to see what would happen. And the
14:54
reality is that things that are ranking better
14:56
are the things that I either wrote myself or
14:58
that I added my own human element to, to be able
15:02
to actually tell a story rather than just pump
15:05
out more content. So like I said, I hope this
15:07
was helpful. Until next time, may your page views
15:10
be high and your bounce rate below. This is Bethany
