Welcome to the Blog It Friend Show!
00:14
What's up you guys?
00:15
Famous Ashley Grant here and today I want to talk to you about something that is very
00:21
near and dear to my heart.
00:23
I want to discuss 10 ways to promote your blog completely for free.
00:28
See, here's the thing, whether you're blogging for business or blogging for a hobby, the
00:34
reality is most people just want to get traffic.
00:38
After all, the more visits to your page, the better.
00:42
And the truth is, it can get really expensive when we try and use paid advertising to generate
00:48
traffic for us.
00:50
And you've got to be honest with me here, even if you are looking into paid traffic,
00:55
you're probably still trying to find some way to get organic traffic.
01:00
And if you have products to sell, it might be worth it for you to do paid traffic, but
01:05
most people that I know, especially my clients, are on extreme budgets and they have to save
01:12
every penny they possibly can.
01:15
And that's honestly the real reason that I went into trying to find ways to generate
01:20
free traffic for blogs.
01:22
My clients understand that they need to get people to their websites.
01:26
That's how they make money.
01:28
But they need to do it for either as cheap as possible or in the best case scenario for
01:34
free.
01:35
So without further ado, here are my 10 best ways to promote your blog absolutely free.
01:41
And we're going to kick things off with my absolute favorite way to do it, and that's
01:45
with guest posting.
01:47
The reason that guest posting is my favorite way to get traffic to your blog is because
01:52
you can take the audiences of other people and then use them to get over to your website.
01:59
More and more business owners are hopping on the blogging train as they realize how
02:03
much blogging can set them apart as experts in their field.
02:08
Unfortunately though, your own blog can only take you so far in establishing credibility
02:14
in your industry.
02:16
At some point, you're going to want to learn how to guest blog to get featured on other
02:20
people's websites because this helps spread your message to a larger audience.
02:26
Guest posting is a fantastic way to showcase your message on other blogs.
02:32
Basically a guest post is simply a blog post that is written by you or at least with your
02:37
byline and it's hosted on a website that's not your own.
02:41
But how can you land a guest post on your blog of choice?
02:46
So here's the quick and easy path to becoming internet famous and gaining some serious street
02:51
cred with guest posting.
02:53
All right, I'm going to walk you through the fast five steps to get on other people's
02:58
blogs.
03:00
The first step is you're going to research it ahead of time.
03:03
The second step is to pick a handful of blogs.
03:06
You don't want to be pitching everybody.
03:08
You want to go after the people that are in your niche.
03:11
Step three is get crafty with your pitch.
03:14
Step four is to send that pitch and then be patient.
03:19
And then step five, finally, is to write the post and then submit it to the blogger.
03:24
I know I rushed through these steps really quickly, but what you really need to know
03:28
is your goal whenever you're trying to do guest posts should be to go after blogs that
03:33
are in your niche.
03:35
You need to go after the websites that already have a warmed up audience that are interested
03:40
in things that you might have to say.
03:42
I did a full breakdown of all of these steps in the show notes.
03:47
So if you go to bloggyfriends.com, they're in the show notes for episode three.
03:51
So I highly recommend checking that out.
03:53
My second tactic for getting free traffic is to participate in roundups.
03:58
Now you've probably seen them all over the internet.
04:01
Things like 20 Thanksgiving recipes or 15 Halloween costume ideas or 10 Valentine's
04:08
DIYs.
04:09
Each one of those roundup posts typically links back to another blogger's amazing post
04:14
that was just perfect for the theme of the writeup.
04:17
How can you create a post of your own?
04:19
So let's say that you want to do a post like 17 rum recipes.
04:23
You could reach out to other bloggers and ask them to submit links to posts that fit
04:27
the theme of what you want to write about.
04:30
Or you could search for rum recipes and then ask the authors of the ones that you found
04:34
for permission to share them in your post.
04:37
You might be wondering why you need to ask for permission.
04:41
Well this is because if you want to use any of the images in your blog post from someone
04:45
else's website, you technically need to have permission to do so.
04:49
And by letting a blogger know ahead of time that they're going to be featured, they're
04:53
10 times more likely to share your post once it goes live.
04:57
Facebook is a fabulous resource for finding bloggers interested in hosting or participating
05:02
in roundups.
05:03
In fact, for my own personal blog, I have found several Facebook groups that are dedicated
05:08
to roundups.
05:09
If you go onto Facebook and you search blogger roundups and then click groups on Facebook,
05:15
you should be able to find a few groups that are perfect for participating in and for hosting
05:19
roundups.
05:21
Once you start posting more and more, you might begin to be asked if you can submit
05:26
your links for other bloggers for their own roundups.
05:29
Another great way to participate in a roundup is to submit a link of your own to what's
05:34
called a linky party.
05:35
Now what's a linky party?
05:37
A linky party or a link up is a party on the internet with colorful drinks and gluten-filled
05:42
snacks where only the most prestigious members of the blogosphere hang out and have fun and
05:48
make fun of other bloggers that have crappy traffic.
05:50
Okay, I'm totally kidding.
05:51
That's not how it is at all.
05:53
In its simplest form, a linky party or a link up is an event that a blogger hosts on their
05:59
website.
06:00
They invite other bloggers to share their work with a new audience on a specific topic
06:04
or a theme.
06:06
You don't actually need to be invited to the party.
06:08
You simply need content that relates to that party's theme.
06:12
Then, just like that guy at work who always seems to know when there's cake in the break
06:17
room, you mosey on in and you join the party.
06:21
So let's say you run a website all about nutritious recipes.
06:26
You could host a linky party by inviting other bloggers to share links to posts with their
06:31
favorite nutritious recipes.
06:33
You might niche it down even further by limiting the event's topic to desserts or gluten-free
06:40
recipes.
06:41
Again, I have a full breakdown of the linky parties on my Bloggy Friends website in the
06:47
show notes.
06:48
So I highly recommend going over there and checking out exactly how to get in on it.
06:52
Moving right along, the third tactic that I have for getting free traffic is to do giveaways
06:58
with other bloggers.
06:59
And I know you've seen these on Facebook.
07:02
I have seen at least 20 of them in the last week.
07:05
Basically, the way that they work is when you're part of giveaways with other bloggers,
07:10
you promote each other for the good of all of you.
07:13
In giveaways that I've participated in with other bloggers, it's gone like this.
07:17
One blogger will secure a giveaway item and write a post about the giveaway.
07:21
The host blogger then creates the giveaway entry form and the host blogger also shares
07:27
all of the information with all the bloggers that are participating.
07:31
Each blogger will then write their own intro and their own headline for their own website.
07:35
Then they share each other's posts and boost them up on social media.
07:39
And then the winner's chosen for whatever the giveaway is.
07:43
Other giveaways that I've seen are where one host blogger will host the giveaway featuring
07:50
something from each blogger that's participating.
07:53
For example, maybe there's 20 bloggers who have written a book or have created a course
07:58
and they'll do a themed giveaway where everybody who participates gets the email addresses
08:04
of anyone who signs up to get those freebies.
08:07
So instead of one person pushing out an opt-in, you've got 20 people pushing out an opt-in,
08:12
but all on one form.
08:14
And then they just share the email addresses.
08:16
It's a great way to get a bunch of traffic really quickly.
08:19
My fourth tactic is the simplest to get traffic to your website and that's to use your email
08:26
signature.
08:27
Now this one's pretty self-explanatory, but if you have a website and it's not listed
08:32
in your email signature, it should be.
08:35
Putting your blog site in your email signature is not only a decent way to generate traffic,
08:39
but it could lead to paid gigs for you.
08:42
And if nothing else, it shows that you're serious about your business.
08:46
One woman I knew, she began putting her recent blog posts in her email signature.
08:51
A few times this led to her emails being forwarded and it even created new leads for a product
08:56
that she was selling.
08:58
On another note, if you aren't emailing your list regularly with your latest posts, you
09:02
should be.
09:03
Now, I will be the first to admit that I'm horrible about this with my personal blog.
09:07
In fact, spoiler alert, I don't even have a really good email list, but I'm working
09:11
on it.
09:12
The thing though is my clients, they always see a nice traffic surge when they send emails
09:17
to their lists featuring their most recent blog posts that have been published.
09:21
All right, moving right along.
09:25
Tactic five, get yourself in the press.
09:27
Now this is not always easy to do and some people think that they need a public relations
09:32
specialist to be working for them, but I personally, anytime I had something cool going on with
09:38
my blogging, I would just reach out to local TV and local radio to see if I could somehow
09:43
get in for some kind of a segment about what I was writing about.
09:47
The goal is to set yourself up as an expert in your field and reach out when the news
09:51
may need you.
09:52
Let's say for example, that you're a travel agent.
09:55
Right now we're in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic and though at the time that you're
10:01
listening to this, it might not be going on anymore.
10:04
Let's say something like that is happening and you have a business that is related to
10:09
something going on.
10:10
So the travel agents are definitely being called by the press right now because everybody
10:14
wants to know about how to handle canceling and postponing their trips.
10:20
So if you're a travel agent, that's a perfect time to get onto the news and I highly recommend
10:25
if you do have something that is relatable that the press is already talking about, reach
10:30
out to them.
10:31
Usually you can find them on Twitter.
10:33
I've noticed that a lot of the news outlets will put the Twitter handle of the person
10:39
who wrote an article or is doing a segment on TV, they'll put their Twitter handle.
10:44
So definitely reach out if you have something cool that you think that the press needs to
10:47
know about.
10:49
Another way to get into the press is to write a book or teach a class on what you know and
10:53
then send out a press release.
10:54
Believe it or not, sometimes the media will pick up on this.
10:58
You never know until you try.
11:00
Another great way to get into the press is to get involved with a charity event or host
11:04
a newsworthy event of your own.
11:07
Additional tips for getting into the press is don't expect the press to come to you.
11:11
Reach out to the media anytime that you have news to share.
11:15
And remember, like I said, social media is your friend.
11:18
So use it to its fullest potential and post all your newsworthy content on all platforms
11:23
and if necessary, tag the outlets that you think might be interested in covering it.
11:29
My sixth tactic for getting free traffic to your website is to write for a website like
11:34
Medium or Reddit, Quora, or even Thrive Global.
11:39
Whenever you're posting on different websites like this, it's a great way to get traffic
11:43
because you're setting yourself up as an expert.
11:46
For example, let's say you've written a lot of posts about dieting.
11:50
If you rework a post that's already on your current website, you could load it to Medium
11:55
or you could answer questions about dieting on Reddit or Quora.
11:59
Oftentimes you will get a link back to your site in your profile and you could even add
12:04
links to your comments and articles that are loaded to the platforms.
12:08
One of the things one of my ghostwriting clients used to do is she would go onto forums to
12:12
answer questions about honeymooning.
12:15
And her advice was so good that people would go to her profile, find her website, and then
12:19
go and look her up and from there would hire her to book their honeymoon.
12:25
So if you have something that you're already an expert in, it might be a good idea to go
12:29
onto these forums and see what kinds of questions people are asking and then answer them so
12:33
you can generate more leads and more traffic.
12:36
Seventh inning stretch guys.
12:38
My seventh tactic for getting free traffic is strategic use of social media.
12:45
Now you'll probably already know that every time you write a blog post on your website,
12:50
you should be sharing it on social media.
12:54
But you should go further than that.
12:57
If you've written for another person's website, like done a guest post for it, you should
13:01
be sharing that as well, but then also tagging the brand or the website that you've written
13:06
it for.
13:08
If you've gotten on the media, you should be sharing that and tagging the media outlet.
13:13
If you've quoted someone in the post that you've written, tag that person too.
13:18
You never know who's going to share what you've written.
13:21
Personally, I wrote a big article for a website and it featured a lot of experts and whenever
13:28
I posted or when the website that I was writing for posted the article, I tagged as many of
13:34
the experts as Twitter would allow me to.
13:37
And what was cool about it was every expert that I tagged either liked or retweeted the
13:41
post, which gave it more traction.
13:43
And as a result, I actually landed a new client because of that article.
13:47
So I can't say it enough.
13:49
You've got to tag people that you're talking about whenever you're sharing it on social
13:53
media.
13:54
Another important thing for strategic use of social media is that if you don't have
13:58
share buttons on your website, you need to get them today.
14:02
You want people to be able to easily share your posts on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest,
14:08
LinkedIn, everywhere.
14:10
The best blogs make it super simple for people by including social share buttons in every
14:17
post.
14:19
Another strategic use of social media is to ask your readers for shares.
14:23
Seriously, asking people to share your posts is a fabulous way to generate more traffic
14:29
because people are most likely to share just because you ask them to.
14:33
Another important note for getting more traction out of your social media use is to use niche
14:39
specific hashtags.
14:41
When you do this to help promote your blog posts on social media sites, other social
14:46
media users who are following similar hashtags are more likely to find you and your content.
14:51
This is why when you use a hashtag like yoga in a Twitter post about the yoga article that
14:56
you just published on your blog, yogis that you've never met before might bend over backwards
15:01
to like and share that post.
15:04
An added benefit to niche specific hashtags is that you're more likely to drive qualified
15:09
sales leads to your website.
15:12
That is when you start selling products if you aren't already.
15:15
Finally, I recommend using click to tweet buttons in your blog posts.
15:19
There are several sites that offer this and it allows you the ability to create a button
15:23
that you embed into your posts that your visitors can simply click to generate a tweet about
15:29
your posts and link back to it.
15:31
My eighth tactic for traffic is to get interviewed on podcasts.
15:35
And I've heard this said many times that guest podcasting is the new guest posting.
15:41
So it's very similar to the steps for getting a guest post.
15:45
The difference is instead of offering your written content, you're going to be offering
15:49
your voice.
15:50
You want to offer your expertise.
15:52
Not only has doing interviews on other people's podcasts gotten me traffic, but it's also
15:57
gotten me paid.
15:58
And the same thing can happen for you.
16:01
What you want to do is target podcasts that cater to your potential audience for your
16:04
blog or your website.
16:06
Know in advance what you want to talk about, make time for the recording.
16:10
And before you make the pitch, you want to listen to previous episodes of the podcast
16:15
to determine if you're a good fit.
16:17
For example, if you're listening to a podcast that has never, ever, ever, ever interviewed
16:22
a guest, why on earth would you offer yourself as a guest?
16:25
You want to avoid podcasts that have nothing to do with your field unless you have something
16:30
exceptionally relevant to offer.
16:33
Don't wing it.
16:34
You want to start small with smaller podcasts and then use that as social proof that you
16:38
deserve to be on the big names.
16:41
And after your podcast goes live, you guessed it, go to social media and share it everywhere.
16:47
My ninth tactic for driving traffic is to interview experts and quote them.
16:53
You want to interview people on video, in person, on the phone, et cetera.
16:59
Get those awesome knowledge bombs and then share the wisdom of what you're learning in
17:03
blog posts, on YouTube videos, Instagram TV, et cetera.
17:08
Once you post it though, tag them.
17:11
Tag whoever it is that you've interviewed.
17:13
More often than not, they're going to share whatever it is that you're tagging them in
17:17
simply based on the interview you've done with them.
17:20
Now one thing I did learn whenever I was at podcast movement last year is that they're
17:24
more likely to share whatever it is that you're interviewing them about if they haven't shared
17:29
this information before.
17:31
So if they've said the same thing in interview after interview, they're less likely to tell
17:35
anybody about the one that they did with you.
17:38
So if you can ask them unique questions, they're more likely to share your podcasts, your YouTube
17:43
videos, your Facebook lives, et cetera.
17:46
One of the big reasons that it's so important to tag experts whenever you're sharing interviews
17:51
that you're writing about them on your social media accounts is because it gets you access
17:56
to their audience as well.
17:59
So let's say you're tagging someone like John Lee Dumas who's like what royalty of podcasting.
18:05
If you tag him on social media, his audience is more likely to see what you've posted because
18:10
they're already looking for stuff about him.
18:13
So that's why I highly recommend if you have interviewed anybody who is an expert in their
18:18
field, share what they said in their interview so that you can get access to their audience.
18:25
My 10th tactic is to network online.
18:28
And by network online, I mean get involved in Facebook groups and LinkedIn groups.
18:33
One thing I will tell you though is on both of these groups, you shouldn't just share
18:37
your links to your website randomly.
18:39
You want to make sure you're following the rules of whatever group you're part of and
18:43
then only sharing your links on days that you're allowed to.
18:46
For example, one of the Facebook groups that I'm in, they have follow Fridays and that's
18:51
the only day that you're allowed to share links to your own website.
18:55
But what's cool is whenever you are in those groups and you post your links on those days,
19:00
that's when you're most likely to get a nice spike in traffic, especially if you have people
19:05
that are in your group that are already interested in something that you're doing.
19:10
Another way to network online is to create your own Facebook group.
19:15
After all, if you're the one that's in charge of the group, you can post as many links as
19:18
you want to.
19:19
So if your business has something that you think a lot of people would be interested
19:23
in joining, perhaps you should create a Facebook group of your own.
19:26
For example, one of the ghostwriter friends that I have, he created a ghostwriting group
19:31
to teach people how to become a ghostwriter and he invited a bunch of people to join the
19:36
group to discuss tactics for getting clients and billing and things like that.
19:42
So if you can come up with something that makes sense to create a Facebook group around,
19:48
why not create a group of your own?
19:50
All right, you guys, I can't believe it, but we've already gotten to the end of my 10 ways
19:56
of generating free traffic.
19:58
But because I just feel like it, I'm going to give you one more bonus tip.
20:03
My bonus tip is to try to apply to speak at a summit or a conference.
20:09
Now I know that right now we're in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic and live conferences
20:13
aren't happening, but virtual summits are popping up everywhere.
20:16
And if you speak in a summit or at a conference, you'll notice an uptick in traffic.
20:21
Not only will the summit or conference typically share your website, but if someone hears what
20:26
you're saying, they're going to be more likely to seek you out and find out more information
20:30
about you.
20:31
I know that was a lot to digest, so let's do a quick recap of everything we just talked
20:35
about.
20:36
My 11 ways to promote your blog for free.
20:40
The first one is guest posting.
20:43
Number two is to participate in roundups or linky parties.
20:48
Number three is to participate in giveaways with other bloggers.
20:52
Number four, if you're not already, use your email signature to promote your blog.
20:57
Number five, get yourself in the press.
21:01
Number six, write for Medium, Reddit, Quora, et cetera.
21:06
Number seven, strategically use social media.
21:10
Number eight, get interviewed on other people's podcasts.
21:16
Number nine, interview experts and quote them.
21:20
Number 10, network like crazy, baby.
21:24
And number 11, my bonus tip, apply to speak at summits or conferences.
21:30
So that was a lot to digest.
21:32
I know I covered a lot of information today, and I highly recommend you go to BloggyFriends.com
21:37
